Plan the best family getaway in Rotorua
As locals with years of experience in the visitor industry and holidaying with children, we’ve crafted a list of top recommendations to satisfy even the pickiest of family members. Explore our insider knowledge to help make your next family adventure to Rotorua unforgettable.
A few tips & tricks include the following:
Get there early! If you’re looking to visit Skyline Luge and Gondola during high season (Dec – Mar), school holidays or a public holiday (especially Easter), arrive at opening time, pack snacks, water, and sunscreen in summer, just in case you need to queue. There are plenty of dining options available at Skyline, and even a Jelly Bean store! Or if it’s winter, head up early as the sun rises, painting a stunning landscape over Lake Rotorua. Don’t forget to wrap up warm as it gets cool on the chairlift.
Redwood Treewalk Nightlights – buy the fast pass option to obtain a set arrival time and avoid the queues. Discover the entire forest lit up like a magical wonderland – perfect for children to explore. If you aren’t able to obtain the fast pass option during summer, movies and popcorn are on offer for the family to enjoy whilst you’re queuing.
If you want a relaxing soak in a natural hot pool but worry that as an adult you won’t get any down time, then Polynesian Spa should be on your list. Located in the city centre, the spa offers a dedicated family area, with a large freshwater pool and mini slide for the kids, whilst two hot mineral pools are located nearby for the adults. Children are required to be supervised, so we suggest taking turns in the big pool with your significant other, allowing you time to sit back and relax.
Having fun is not just for the kids! ZORB is a shared activity for all ages, offering a great opportunity for bonding time that puts you all on the same level. The ride is full of excitement, adventure and laughs, so as an adult, don’t write it off. Some of our favourite feedback includes “it’s way more fun that it looks”, “it’s the first time my teenager has smiled on holiday” and “how do we get one for home”? For an extra thrill, challenge the kids to a race on the Dual Straight track for who has to do tonight’s dinner dishes. Book your ZORB adventure today.
Be sure to take a walk through Kuirau Park – its free to visit, with several walkways taking you to see the crater lake, bubbling mud pools and hot springs. Discover a cool playground, plus barbecues and picnic tables that are free to use.
Looking for something a little more when heading out? Perhaps a nice drink, stylish décor, good food and great value? Fainting Goat has fabulous cocktails, foot long pizzas and sharing platters. If you have younger children, arrive for an early start and to grab the best table. Another great local pick is Eastwood for the best brunch. You’ll find it located at the edge of the Redwood Forest, offering both indoor and outdoor dining, with ample green space for the family to run around in.
With these tips in hand, you’re well-equipped to make the most of your family trip to Rotorua, ensuring fun and memorable experiences for everyone.
