Your First ZORB Ride: What to Expect
Your First ZORB Ride: What To Expect
When you first pull up to ZORB Rotorua, you might find yourself wondering:
- What is going on?!
- Why is everyone laughing?!
- And most importantly… how do I ZORB?!
Plenty of visitors arrive unsure, a bit confused, and sometimes a little nervous. But by the end of their visit, they’re laughing, cackling, and saying “That was the most fun I’ve had in years!”
What Is ZORB?
ZORB, in its purest form, is rolling down a hill inside a giant inflatable ball filled with 40 litres of fresh, clean water. Think of it as a giant waterslide — but instead of sliding down, the slide comes with you.
People describe it as:
- “The best thing we did in Rotorua!”
- “So fun that I couldn’t stop laughing!”
Best of all, ZORB was invented right here in Rotorua, New Zealand, and it’s been a beloved Kiwi adventure for years.
Choosing Your Track
ZORB Rotorua is the only ZORB site in New Zealand. We have four tracks to choose from (you can also grab a combo deal if you want to try more than one… which most people do!)
- Straight Track: Smooth, straight, and simple. No twists or turns; the perfect introduction to get used to how ZORB works.
- Sidewinder: The longest ZORB track in the world, complete with six hairpin bends. You’ll slosh, slide, and laugh harder than you have in years. Extra fun with friends; you can ride with up to three people!
- Pipeline: Starts gently with a few bouncy corners, then shoots through a forest tunnel before a fast finish on the straight.
- MEGA: The steepest and fastest ride at ZORB Rotorua. You launch from the very top of Mt Ngongotahā and fly down to the bottom. If you want thrills and killer views, this one’s for you.
Get Ready for Your Ride
When preparing for ZORB Rotorua, here are a few things to know:
- At check-in, our friendly team will run you through everything you need for the day. If you have medical conditions or past injuries, let us know.
- We have changing rooms, bathrooms, and video-monitored cubbies for storing dry clothes and bags.
- You will get wet! Each ZORB is filled with 40 litres of water, so bring swimwear or clothing you don’t mind getting soaked.
- Our crew at the top and bottom of the tracks will give clear instructions to keep you safe and having the best time.
The Ride
ZORB rides are fun, exciting, side-splittingly funny, and a tiny bit chaotic in the best possible way.
To get in, you’ll take a Superman-style dive headfirst into the ball when the staff give the all-clear. If you have injuries or mobility concerns, the team can help you enter in a different, comfortable way.
Once you’re in, the top crew will run their safety checks, zip the door, and send you rolling!
At the bottom, our team will catch your ZORB, unzip the cover, and help you slide out feet first. Then it’s off to the spa, sauna, grab a coffee, or hop in the van back up the hill for your next ride!
Common Questions
Is ZORB safe?
Yes! We inspect every ball daily and pull any that need maintenance straight away. Your safety is our top priority.
What if I’m nervous?
Totally normal. You can ask questions, watch others ride, and ease in at your own pace. Most nervous riders come out laughing their heads off and go straight back for another.
Can kids ride?
Yep! Children aged 5 and up can ride. ZORB involves splashing water, so consider whether your child is comfortable with that.
What’s the weight limit?
125 kg per rider or 250 kg combined per ball. You can ride solo, or with up to three people as long as the limit isn’t exceeded.
Is the water cold?
Nope! The water is cool in summer and warmed in winter to keep you comfortable year-round.
Do I get dizzy?
No. You don’t flip upside down — you slide with the water, rather than tumbling like a hamster.
